Removal of an existing ship navigation pile in Portsmouth Harbour and installation of a new dolphin piling at a precise location, complete with maintenance access and platform.
Overview
The project included the design of a new navigational pile with an access ladder and maintenance platform, engineered to withstand harsh marine environments. The existing piling and platform were removed, and the new assembly was installed precisely at the navigational mark provided by the client.
The Challenge
Solution
To overcome harsh weather conditions, a work barge and crawler crane were used to assist with the installation and removal process. The barge was equipped with spud legs, which were lowered into the seabed to provide stability even in rough conditions.
The maintenance platform and ladder were designed and manufactured for quick and safe on-site installation, minimising working-at-height exposure. The platform was fully galvanised and fitted with complete balustrades, ancillary ship marks, and a navigational light to meet operational requirements.
Working with MTECH, particularly Martin, has been a very smooth experience. Any questions raised—whether in face-to-face meetings or via email—are always answered promptly and professionally. When site visits to Portico were required, Martin was extremely helpful in arranging gate access and ensuring everyone had the correct security clearance and completed the training video.
The refurbishment itself was carried out to a high standard, and site visits were always welcomed. The end user is very pleased with the addition of the new hydraulics, which significantly reduces manual handling. Overall, working with MTECH has been an excellent experience.
